Don’t Feel Blue About Badge Renewal
Navigating systems to pay bills and renew essentials like blue badges might feel daunting whether online or on paper, especially when you need to provide extra documentation. Reductions in some services means it is not always possible to get instant help so here is a brief summary to guide you through the blue badge renewals process in East Sussex
You can apply to renew your blue badge online via a government portal or by post. If you do not wish to renew digitally or if you have not realised your badge is coming to an end, you should receive notification of expiry along with a paper form 6 weeks before the expiry date.
If you have internet access, you can go to www.gov.uk/apply-blue-badge to check eligibility. This system will identify your current badge, check a few details and determine if you qualify automatically or whether current medical evidence is required. If you qualify automatically you will be directed to the renewal portal. It is useful to have the serial number of your existing badge to hand and you will be asked for other details such as DLA/PIP award to help identify you in the system.
When it comes to renewing, you’ll need to upload photo ID such as a passport and proof of address e.g. a utility bill. You are also asked to upload new photographs to be used for your badge although, at the current time, this is not necessary for renewals up to the end of September due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Each step is listed in a handy checklist that allows you to monitor your progress and there are links to follow if you need help with uploading. If you cannot upload images you are advised about other ways to provide them. Once the application has been processed, you will be sent an email about payment. You can pay online via the link you’re sent or you can send a cheque or postal order.
Enforcement of blue badges has been relaxed so no one should be receiving penalties for displaying expired badges but this relaxation will end on 30th September.
